Introduction of this package will reduce compliance costs, making it easier to build, invest, and innovate!

What’s Changing?

In the past, builders, consultants, and homeowners paid expensive license fees just to access mandatory compliance standards. Under the new Productivity Package, the government is removing these fees to make building smoother and more affordable for everyone.

  • Comprehensive Access: Furthermore, fee removal covers mandatory referenced standards across construction, occupational health and safety (OHS), and product safety.

  • Significant Savings: Specifically, small firms in electrical, plumbing, and construction can save up to $1,600 every year.

  • Simplified Compliance: By providing standards like AS 1926.1:2024 (Swimming Pool Safety) freely, the government helps professionals apply safety rules effectively.

Why This Matters for the Building Industry

Ultimately, this reform isn’t just about saving money; it’s about removing the friction that slows down construction and innovation.

  1. Lifting Productivity: Lowering the cost of compliance makes more housing projects viable and reduces the administrative burden on builders.
  2. Supporting New Methods: Free access makes it easier for the industry to adopt modern methods of construction. For example, builders can easily use prefabricated and modular systems.
  3. Digital Innovation (Unlocking the Data & AI Opportunity): To complement free access, the government is piloting AI-enabled tools. Consequently, these tools will make the National Construction Code easier to navigate. In fact, this supports a wider push to advance AI integration, including up to $70 million for ‘AI Accelerator’ grants. Moreover, this tech-forward approach ensures compliance keeps pace with modern digital practices, saving you valuable time on-site and in the office.

When this will be implemented?

Although the government just locked in funding, exact rollout dates and platform details are still emerging. Currently, Standards Australia and the Government are building the technical implementation to establish how public access will operate for users.
